Not really, just another happy little lady!

Not really, just another happy little lady!
When we arrived at Varazdin in the morning the square was abuzz with people having coffee, sharing cakes, smoking cigarettes, chatting and laughing. This, of course, is the way it’s been all throughout Croatia in that the square is the place to be, and to be seen, whether you’re socializing or doing business. There was also a huge market where fresh vegetables, fruit, bread, flowers, meat, fish……..and clothes were being sold – the place was rocking! By 2pm it was dead quiet, all the stores were closed and there was hardly a soul around………very peaceful! The picture was taken at 8:30 Sunday morning when it was still peaceful and on the way back to our hotel we passed several people our age or a little older all dressed up and we assumed they were headed to Church…………we were off to the airport!
……and thought we would spend our last two days with Marilyn visiting Samobor and Varazdin. Both places were recommended by the Croatian Embassy in Ottawa to Marilyn and are smaller dots on the map compared to Zagreb and Dubrovinik…..good choices. However, the weather has drastically changed……..maybe I’m exaggerating but it’s no longer in the High 20’s and is struggling to be in the high teens. This, of course, has been great for hiking and walking so we dare not complain! Samobor is a small town south of Zagreb, pop. of about 19,000 and is known as the place where stressed-out people from Zagreb come to relax and get their fix of good food……we did both, but we added in good wine. Just spent the night there and then went north to Varazdin which has twice the population, ie. 47,000, and is known as “little Vienna”……….and we would agree. The cappuccino and torte that we had in the early morning was second to none and the traditional Croatian supper was great. Off to the airport in the morning with Marilyn as she leaves us for Canada and Jim and I will have a night on our own in Zagreb to review what a fabulous journey we’ve had over the past three weeks with Marilyn……….she will be missed! Stay tuned for the final synopsis.

…….Plitvice Lakes National Park – another air bnb little gem!
PLNP is the largest of Croatia’s national parks and although we’ve only hiked two others in Croatia, Krka and Paklenica, I can’t imagine there’s any more beautiful…….it’s absolutely stunning and jaw-dropping. Plitvice was proclaimed a national park in 1949 and 30 years later was included in UNESCO’s list of World Natural Heritage sites and has a surface area of over 294 square km. Today we spent almost six glorious hours hiking in the park and were overwhelmed by the beauty…..especially the waterfalls which were continuous! There’s no way to describe it really, but there’s a quote by a 1937 researcher, Iva Pevalek, who said “there are water, lakes, waterfalls and forest elsewhere! but Plitvice Lakes are unique”….they simply must be seen! Jim, Marilyn and I agree……I will attach some photos but the beauty cannot be captured. Marilyn’s beauty, however, was captured in the same three photos I posted on Paklenica but I will be more cautious this time……she’s so little I missed her when I was looking through the photos.
