Road trip with George and Gerry

We had been talking about a trip to Scotland in Oct/Nov for quite some time…….but as time went on during the spring and summer of 2014 it just didn’t happen. No main reason really, but looking back Jim and I were just too busy with him back to work full time for the spring/summer at Joe and Lois’,  the cottage rental was quite busy, company coming and going etc.   George and Gerry were also busy with George winding down her professional life(can’t call it retirement) and also preparing to send Anna off to Acadia for her first year.  So discussions began about delaying Scotland for another year and taking a road trip instead. Where to go? Didn’t take us long to come up with a very rough itinerary which would take us first to image imageOttawa and then into New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia and up the Atlantic Seaboard arriving at our sister Sharon’s for American Thanksgiving……..not a bad plan at all.
November 4th brought good driving weather so we left Tidnish and our ‘lame’ furnace into the hands of Pierre and we headed west to Ottawa. Great drive in our new vehicle and decided to spend the night in Montagny, Que.  Continued on the next day in Quebec where Jim showed us all his old stomping grounds around Laval, Ste. Eustache, Deux Montagnes, Oka and from his younger years, the ferry to Hudson where he visited his aunt and uncle.   (See picture of G, G and J at the ferry site in Hudson).  He also shared a few other stories about wild weekends in Wildwood(appropriate name), New Jersey which I will not get into here.  Next stop, Marilyn’s in Ottawa, for some great food, wine and friendship!!  You probably can’t read her apron but it says “shag it”!

The rain stopped…….

The rain stopped.......

…..which was great because after checking around with travel agencies and trying to phone Air Canada and being put on hold we were told our best bet was to go to the airport and check out there what our options were! What a surprise to find out Lufthansa had already booked us and even though we were going to get in six hours later, we were overjoyed and sang their praises all day. So now we’re at the airport headed for New York and hope there’s something to do there for our layover of six plus hours……..and hope the weather is good so,we can get out of there and home tonight! Great trip it was ….. and just a few hassles along the way which is to be expected ……. and of course we missed a lot of terrible weather along the way ….. And are coming home to spring, RIGHT!!!!!!!!

April fool’s day…..

…….was yesterday and I got Jim and Marilyn good! I told them we had a notification from Lufthansa that our flight on Thursday was delayed by 12 hours which meant we would miss all of our connections. Guess what, today we find out Lufthansa is on strike and we’re scrambling!!!!!!! Crap…….we now want to come home real bad no matter what the weather. Headed off to find out what we can do because apparently everything is already booked for the next three days!!!

Livraria Lello……

Livraria Lello......

……..is the third most beautiful library in the world and cannot imagine what the other two must be like as this one is stunning……you gotta google it!   We were here once before and just had to come back as it is so worth the visit.   Spent another rainy day in Portugal and so grateful as we have heard nothing but bad reports from the Nova Scotia weather.  Today we took the hop on, hop off bus for a tour of this wonderful city as that is a great thing to do in the rain.  Time to come home as we’re starting to repeat ourselves with walks until about three in the rain, port in the afternoon followed by good meals!

Yesterday we said good-bye to Spain………

image………and headed to Porto by train.  Jim is off the hook for driving and we will spend the next few days exploring what Porto has to offer on foot.  It’s been several years since Jim and I have been here and it is Marilyn’s first time so we were all a little excited and besides, we were getting sick of that Spanish wine(not really!)  It was good that our last night in Spain ended on a positive note, food wise……..I had a great cod dish,  Marilyn had sea bass and Jim tried the ribs – Trip Advisor reviews came through again.     After our two hour train trip  we arrived, no surprise, to rain!  Walked in the rain for a couple of hours, came back to dry off in our unfortunately very cold apartment and had a glass of port left by our air bnb host.    The rain continued so we went somewhere close by recommended by our host and Trip Advisor and thankful we only ordered two meals , one of them cod, as there was enough for the three of us and lunch for today.  Woke up this morning to cloudy skies and managed to walk around this beautiful old city of  200,000 for three hours before the showers started.   Given that it was quite warm it really didn’t matter so much about the rain so we continued and wandered over to the ‘port caves’ across the river Duoro but we were too early for the tour and tasting.  The port cave our air bnb host recommended was Offley so we picked up a bottle and after our rainy walk home we had a glass of port and it was ‘offley’ good!    So was the nap after ……….and off we go to another restaurant our host recommended……and trip advisor seconded!  A success and already enjoying the food here so much better than in Spain……it might just be luck but hope it continues, and the rain stops!    I dare not  complain as we’ve heard from friends and family in Nova Scotia, and Calgary, and what we are getting here is a joy compared to what you folks are dealing with there…..sure hope your weather changes soon and not just because we will be home in a few days!!!  Take care

Baiona, population 12,000…….

Baiona, population 12,000.......

……..was a little treat we found on the map after leaving Santiago de Compostella.   The Pinta, from the fleet of Christopher Columbus, arrived on March 1, 1493 bringing the news of the discovery of the new world.  Today Baiona is a popular summer resort and we were glad we were able to enjoy it in March as the weather was warm and the sunny skies allowed for some great walking.   We started our day walking along the fortress overlooking the bay and then along the boardwalk and before you knew it we had been walking for two hours.  Jim then discovered that not far from here you could pick up the Portuguese route of the camino which meant we had to walk and  explore  a little further.  We did this for just over an hour and then Marilyn and I headed off to do a little shopping but Jim continued on his own for a couple of more hours.  By the end of it all we were a little tired, meaning nap time,  and this was followed by a great meal and an early bedtime as the clocks change  ahead tonight and we have an early train to catch…….and catch you later!

Baiona and a great way…….

image image imageBaiona and a great way.......

…..to start the day hanging out with these two on this wonderful walk. We began walking around the fortress and it continued on and on and on!   The seagull on the cross stood there for ages and we were convinced he only had one leg and after several minutes he switched legs and we realized he was doing his yoga…..tree pose!

Marilyn in front of the cathedral……

Marilyn in front of the cathedral......

…..at Santiago de Compostella which was under renovation, quite beautiful even with that going on.  We arrived in time for the Mass which many ‘pilgrims’ who have done the camino attend and at the same time  many tourists, like us, are wandering through.   A beautiful choir and a magnificent cathedral.   We decided not to spend the night in Santiago but had coffee and a sweet and headed out to try and find a quieter spot.

The Boot, as seen in this picture……..

imageThe Boot…….is not just any boot, it’s the boot of anyone who’s done the camino and they come here to celebrate their journey and then they burn their boots  in the pit with the cross…..see below.   We did not burn our boots because, although they did a little piece of the camino, they were still fairly new and had a whole lot of walking still to do.
